Edward M. Whelan

Ed Whelan is an attorney licensed in Florida, and he is board-certified by The Florida Bar in Construction Law. He is AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell and has been recognized as a "Best Law Firm" by U.S. News-Best Lawyers, and has been listed as a “Super Lawyer” for 13 years running.

Ed’s practice focuses on construction-related issues, including state and federal procurement. Through his practice, Ed advises clients, from large corporations to individual homeowners, in avoiding construction disputes, including drafting and reviewing construction contracts and assisting clients with licensing issues. He also has extensive knowledge and experience in trial, mediation, arbitration, landlord and tenant issues, and a wide variety of construction claims including lien disputes, and performance and payment bond claims.

 

Ed earned his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of Maryland. Prior to law school, he worked as an estimator and project manager for several mechanical contractors in the Washington, D.C. area. He earned his J.D. at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he graduated cum laude, and was a member of the prestigious Order of the Coif. Ed was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1995 and The Florida Bar in 1999. He is board certified in Construction Law by the Florida Bar and is a member of the Florida Bar Construction Law Certification Committee. Whelan is the co-author of several published works on construction litigation including the Florida Chapter, State-by-State Guide to Construction Contracts and Claims; Owner’s Implied Warranty of Adequacy of the Plans and Specifications (Spearin Warranty): A Primer on its Application and Limitations; the South Carolina Chapter, The Design/Build Process: A Guide to Licensing and Procurement Requirements in the 50 States and Canada; and the South Carolina Chapter, State-by- State Guide to Architect, Engineer and Contractor Licensing.
